BIOTECHNOLOGY INFORMATION NETWORK SYSTEM www.btisnet.gov.in BTISnet Recruitment 2014 Biotechnology Information Network - An Overview
Recognizing the importance of information technology to achieve advanced research in modern biology and biotechnology, bioinformatics program , designed as a database and network of distributed organization , was launched during the 1986 - 1987.
The program has become a very effective vehicle for the transfer and exchange of information , scientific knowledge , technological packages and references in the country involving 10-12000 scientific staff . Ten Distributed Information Centres and an Apex Center in the Department of Biotechnology, Information Centres and 46 Sub - Distributed , located in universities and research institutes of national importance, are fully involved in this task. Six national centers have been set up for graphics -based interactive molecular modeling and other biocomputational needs . Four long-term courses in M.Sc. message level Diploma in Bioinformatics at the University of Poona , Jawaharlal Nehru University of Calcutta University and Madurai Kamaraj University , is fulfilling the need for long and outstanding human resources trained in this interdisciplinary area . The entire network has become very sophisticated scientific infrastructure for bioinformatics involving state of the art computer and communication facilities .
The communication network that connects all bioinformatics centers , is playing a vital role in the success of the bioinformatics program . Databases , the R & D in bioinformatics , human resource development and a variety of support services and programs for R & D biotechnology , has made this program very popular and useful to the scientific community . With excellent cooperation received from various agencies of the Government of India , in particular the National Informatics Centre ( NIC) , which provided communication support , initially by e - mail and then for full Internet access , and some value-added services , the network made it possible to assume the role of a closed user group represents a scientific network in various interdisciplinary topics covering biotechnology , agriculture , health and the environment , and other issues of scientific importance . The contributions made by scientists and academics in the UGC university departments , laboratories and CSIR and ICAR institutions , which are our bioinformatics centers , national, have resulted in the creation of an excellent ability to use a variety of information resources on the Internet. More than 100 databases that address different aspects of interest to the R & D in biotechnology are already available on the net . A national EMBnet node is established at the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics ( CDFD ) , Hyderabad.
Four sites mirror to reflect important biological databases being established in IISC , Jawaharlal Nehru University , University of Pune , and IMTECH to promote and support R & D in Genomics and Proteomics , the two emerging fields biotechnology that require critical support of genomic databases . With these resources now available on the BTISnet , has now become a single largest source of information for all references to the literature related to biotechnology , scientific data , patent information , political affairs and related issues. Many home pages on the Internet have stayed to give details of the services provided to the scientific community . The Biotechnology Information Center ( BTIC ) Apex Center , established in the Department of Biotechnology , is coordinating the activities of the entire network , including hosting a home page on the activities of Department of Biotechnology and its main programs and maintaining multiple directories and databases on research projects funded by the department. A Biotechnology Patent Facilitating Cell has recently been established using BTIC facilities to provide patent search services scale .
